The veteran has played 79 first-class games for Saurashtra, scoring a massive 5947 runs, which came at a fantastic average of 50.39 with 19 centuries to his name. But despite having a considerable amount of runs, the wicketkeeper-batter has not received a single call-up to the Indian Test squad.

IPL 2022 | Brendon McCullum rates Sheldon Jackson highly, compares him with MS Dhoni

The entire cricketing space is witnessing the top-class wicketkeeping abilities that Sheldon Jackson is putting on display in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Brendon McCullum, the head coach of the Kolkata K Knight Riders, is equally impressed with the 35-year-old and has showered praises on him. McCullum is so impressed with Jackson's abilities that he has compared them with those of the India legend MS Dhoni. "Sheldon continues to get better and better. He is 35, but you wouldn't know. His growth in the last two years has been significant. He has a good ball-striking ability. And very few players hit the ball as far as he does. He is not too far behind Andre Russell when he is striking the ball, if not the same. I am sure with more opportunities, we will see a performance from Sheldon," McCullum told Sportstar. Jackson hasn't had many opportunities in the middle on the batting front. In the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), he was unbeaten on three. Next, Jackson registered a duck against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Later, the Saurashtra cricketer was left out in KKR's encounter with Punjab Kings (PBKS). KKR featured in three games in the tournament so far. Out of which, they have managed to register a victory in two while they went down against the Faf du Plessis-led RCB. They take on Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians (MI) next on Wednesday, April 6, in Pune. The MI team is coming off two losses in as many games. As for the points table, Rajasthan Royals (RR) sit at the top with two wins from as many games, while Sunrisers Hyderabad is placed at the bottom. Defending champions, CSK, have lost all three games they have played so far.

MS Dhoni, had some other plans. He smashed Andre Russell for three boundaries in the 18th over, struck a four and a six in the penultimate over and two crucial boundaries in the final over guided the team to a decent total of 131 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

Ranji Trophy 2021-22 | Day 1 | Round-up: Devdutt Padikkal makes headlines with unbeaten ton

Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal made headlines on the first day of the Ranji Trophy match against Puducherry after he struck a fine century and remained unbeaten at 161 to help the side put 293/3 before stumps in Chennai. The side lost a couple of early wickets and were reduced to 39/2 before Padikkal and Krishnamurthy Siddharth got into the act. The two batters rescued the side with a 223-run stand for the third wicket. Siddharth eventually departed for 85. Padikkal was then joined by Manish Pandey and the left-right batting duo made sure that there were no further fall of wickets in the day. Pandey was not out at 21 on Day 1. Punjab vs Tripura On a low scoring Day 1 during the clash between Punjab and Tripura in Delhi, the Punjab side was pushed on to the back foot after being reduced to 79/7. In reply to Tripura’s 127 in the first innings, Punjab were off to a dismal start after losing two wickets for just 10 runs. Anmolpreet Singh and Sandeep Singh tried to steady the ship and chipped in with a partnership of 44 runs for the third wicket. But Mandeep’s departure for 18 broke the shackles as Punjab lost wickets in quick succession and were left tottering at 79/7 before stumps were called. Manisankar Murasingh scalped a fifer for his side. Earlier, Punjab bowlers produced an exceptional performance and bowled out Tripura early during the course. Baltej Singh had a five-for to his name while Kaul and Vinay Choudhary picked up a couple of wickets each. Saurashtra vs Goa Riding on some fine piece of batting from Chirag Jani and Sheldon Jackson on Day 1 of the match against Goa, Saurashtra posted 343/7 in Ahmedabad. Batting first, Saurashtra lost Snell Patel with no score on the board but Harvik Desai and Jani came in for the team’s rescue. The two stitched a partnership of 75 runs with Jani doing the bulk scoring. Desai was later sent back in the hut for 14. Jani was then joined by Cheteshwar Pujara and they put up a stand of 53 runs for the third wicket before Pujara who looked steady, was trapped in front of the stumps by Prabhudessai for 28. But the real dominance with the bat for Saurashtra began now as Jani along with Jackson pushed the Goa team on the back foot. Both the batters together scored 102 runs for the fourth wicket with Jani scoring a massive 140 and Jackson eventually remaining unbeaten at 96. Tamil Nadu vs Jharkhand It was Baba Indrajith and R Sai Kishore who rescued Tamil Nadu from a tricky situation and provided them resistance against Jharkhand on Day 1 in Guwahati. Batting first, Tamil Nadu were reduced to 32/4 when Indrajith was joined by Sai Kishore in the middle. The two batters then began the rebuilding process for the side and stitched a stand of 171 runs with Indrajith notching up a ton and Sai Kishore chipping in with 81. Tamil Nadu ended the day’s proceedings at 256/7. Rahul Shukla picked up three wickets for his side. Railways vs J&K Railways’ Karan Sharma rattled the Jammu and Kashmir batting unit after he returned with six wickets on the first day of the match in Chennai. The J&K side were off to a decent start with openers Suryansh Raina and Qamran Iqbal putting up 88 runs for the first wicket. But Raina’s dismissal for 28 saw wickets going down for J&K at regular intervals and they were reduced to 238/8 to eventually get bowled out for 259. Iqbal top-scored with 83. Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22 | Semi-final: Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh set to lock horns in final

Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh will lock horns in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021. While Tamil Nadu defeated Saurashtra in the semi-final, Himachal Pradesh thumped Services to march ahead. Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra In a high-scoring clash in Jaipur, Tamil Nadu chased down a target of 311 runs in the final over by 2 wickets on Friday. The Vijay Shankar-led side lost a couple of early wickets but Baba Aparajith and Baba Inderjith first came in for the rescue and stitched a stand of 97 runs for the third wicket. Indrajith was eventually dismissed for 50 off 58. Aparajith who eventually went on to notch up 122 in 124 deliveries, was then joined by Dinesh Karthik in the middle. Karthik too chipped in with a brisk 26-ball 31 but it was Washington Sundar and Aparajith’s fifth wicket partnership of 76 runs that got the side back on track before Aparajith was sent back by Chudasama. But Sundar continued with his form and scored a fifty but was dismissed in the penultimate over for 70. Tamil Nadu lost another wicket at the end of the 49th over bringing the equation down to 7 needed off the final over with two wickets in hand. Sai Kishore kept his cool in the final over and he along with Silambarasan guided the team over the line by 2 wickets. Sakariya returned with a fifer for his side. Earlier, in the day, Saurashtra rode on Sheldon Jackson’s ton and half-centuries from Vishvaraj Jadeja and Arpit Vasavada to put 310/8 in 50 overs on the board. Silambarasan picked up three wickets for 54 runs in 10 overs while Vijay Shankar had four scalps to his name but at the cost of 72 runs in 10 overs. Himachal Pradesh vs Services Himachal Pradesh dominated the Services’ batting unit thoroughly and didn’t let them take an upper hand during the course of the innings. The Services side lost wickets at regular intervals to get reduced to 174/6 before getting bundled out for 204 while chasing 282. Captain Rajat Paliwal scored a fifty for his side. Himachal Pradesh skipper Rishi Dhawan had a brilliant day at the office as he picked up four wickets for 27 runs in 8.1 overs. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh’s batsmen and especially Chopra, Dhakan and Vashisht struck valuable runs to help the side put 281/6 in 50 overs. Dhawan led from the front and scored 84 off 77 while Chopra notched up 78 off 109. Vashisht too made a valuable contribution with an unbeaten 29-ball 45. Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh will play the title clash in Jaipur on Sunday.

With Rabada, Nortje not available full time, Delhi Capitals in a spot of bother ahead of IPL Mini auction

Abhishek Singh ∙ 17 Feb 2021

With Rabada, Nortje not available full time, Delhi Capitals in a spot of bother ahead of IPL Mini auction

Last year was the best for the Delhi Capitals in their IPL history so far. A lot of credit for that success went to the South African pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje. The two among themselves had taken 52 wickets in the last season and Rababa was the Purple Cap winner. The problem for Capitals this season is going to be the non-availability of these two players for the first few weeks of the IPL as the Pakistan tour of South Africa is scheduled to take place between 2nd to 16th April. If, as being speculated, the IPL starts in the first week of April, then the Capitals would probably miss the services of these two players for their first 4-5 games. Otherwise an almost settled team, the Capitals will therefore go in this auction trying to fill the place of two quicks with at least one genuine quick and one Indian fast bowlers. Auction Scenarios for Delhi Capitals Purse- 12.9 crore Available Indian Slots- 6 Available Foreigner Slots- 2 Squad Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan, Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Prithvi Shaw, R Ashwin, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan, Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Pravin Dubey, Chris Woakes Slots to be filled and prospective buys Bowling all-rounder Apart from looking for an out and out fast bowler to pair up with Chris Woakes for initial few games, the Shreyas Iyer led team would look to have a few all-rounders by their side, especially to cover up for Daniel Sams and Harshal Patel which they traded with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the trade window this season. Thus they would target two players in particular to give their team the much-needed boost Kyle Jamieson - Base Price- 75 lakh The 26-year-old Kiwi all-rounder is one of the most talented players going around the world. With 54 wickets in just 38 T20 games at an average of 20.59, Jamieson is a six-foot four-inch of proper danger staring into the yes of the batsmen at the other end. His economy is 7.98 is also reasonable enough for someone who picks these many wickets. Along with astonishing bowling figures, Jamieson is no mug with the bat either as the Auckland born has a batting average of 27.14 and a strike rate of 138. Jhye Richardson- Base Price- 1.5 Crore The other player that Delhi might go for is Jhye Richardson of Australia. Highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded Big Bash League, Delhi would look to go for him and fill the space left by both Nortje, Rabada and also Daniel Sams. Richardson, 24, has 78 wickets in 62 games and in this very season of the BBL, he took 29 wickets in 17 innings. The Delhi team has only two overseas spots left. Thus these are the two players that they would most likely bid heavily for. Indian wicket-keeper Another spot that the Capitals need to secure is that of an Indian wicket-keeper. With Ricky Ponting being the coach of the Capitals, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Delhi side goes for Alex Carey, whom they released earlier this year. With him piling up runs in the BBL (425 runs) this season, the chances of him getting that one overseas spot is very likely. But if the team is looking to go strategically, then they might just let Carey go and pick up an Indian wicket-keeper batsman. Sheldon Jackson- Base Price- 20 Lakh In case the Capitals do go looking for a wicketkeeper, current Pondicherry and former Saurashtra player, Sheldon Jackson could be an option. The 34-year-old scored 242 runs including a century in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He is an outstanding wicket-keeper and could be an ideal substitute for Pant in Indian conditions. Play it smart at the end With these three slots filled, Capitals still have five spots left and if they wish to, they can fill them by going for small but effective buys at the end of the auction. Thus, they would like to fill a few spaces with an Indian fast bowler, an Indian fast-bowling all-rounder and an Indian leg spinner to cover for Amit Mishra and an Indian batsman. Their targets in such a situation could be the following players Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav- Base Price 1 Core Umesh Yadav was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore and with Ishant Sharma’s injury scare being a very high probability and Mohit Sharma, Tushar Deshpande and Harshal Patel being either released or transferred by the Capitals, Yadav fits the bill for the Jindal owned side. Lukman Meriwala- Base Price- 20 Lakh Lukman Meriwala, a Baroda born bowler has done exceedingly well over the years in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, being one of the highest wicket-takers in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 29-year-old has 72 wickets in 44 games. Indian fast-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube- Base Price- 50 Lakh Dube, 27, was released by the RCB as well and priced at 75 lakh, Dube, could be a very smart buy for the Capitals. Given the fact that he can cover for Axar Patel in case of an injury and can get quick runs in the end overs if the team chooses to play a proper bowler in place of Hetmyer and Dube plays at the West Indian’s place and a fast bowler replaces an Indian batter or spinner. Indian batsmen Although the batting unit of the Capitals looks settled, if Ajniky Rahane doesn’t click or Shikhar Dhawan flops or for covering up any uncertainties, players like Hanuma Vihari and Kedar Jadhav could be considered. Both of the players can bat and bowl. Jadhav has even played for the Delhi franchise previously. Hanuma Vihari- Base Price- 1 crore Kedar Jadhav- Base Price- 2 Crore
