A tough fight from both sides and a win to remember for the ages for the Indian contingent. They kick off their World Cup campaign with a surreal victory, turning the tide from a tricky position. This would certainly boost the morale of the team as a unit. On the contrary, Australia will have to reassemble and bounce back from their next match. Losing just one game out of the nine is just okay for now.

So, that is it folks from this space. This is Arijit Kundu singing off along with co-commentators, AkshayaKrishna Polya, Akshay Bhide, and Sidharth Gulati. Shoutout to Zeeshan Naiyer who was the scorer/analyst for this game. Cricket fans across the globe, grab some butter chicken and Mangalore masala dosa😉, eat, sleep stick to this space for the World Cup (and other cricketing actions), and repeat.
Rohit Sharma (India Captain): "Yeah, pretty exciting. Good feeling to come on top. At the start of the tournament, it was very good to win a game.

Right from the start, we did play well. We do take a lot of pride in the fielding. We did well today as well with the fielding despite the conditions being tough with a lot of heat.

The bowlers did well, we knew there was a bit of help for the bowlers. Seamers did reverse. Spinners also had good assistance, and they did well to exploit it.

I was nervous when we were 3/2, and why not? Because you never want to start an innings like that, especially when you chase such a target.

Credit goes to Australia, but yeah, we did play a few loose shots. Then, Virat and KL Rahul batted brilliantly, and the partnership took us safely to the end. Hats off to them. A match-winning partnership.

Adapting to the respective conditions is a bigger challenge as we will play on different surfaces and conditions. We may have to change our combinations and the team is ready for it.

The crowd in Chennai was fantastic. They love good cricket. And we, too, provide them a good cricket. For fielders, I can understand fielding under the sun and heat. But for them (spectators) to sit down under immense heat and cheering was pretty special."
Pat Cummins (Australia Captain): "I think we were 50 runs short. Tough trying to defend 200 runs. It's always tough. Obviously, they're a very good bowling attack. Their spinners made us do a tough tough work. We had twenty overs of spin within the fifty overs.

I forgot about it [on Mitch Marsh's dropped catch]. Not ideal especially for his calibre. It happens. 10-4 would've been a dream start but it's okay. Little bit of nibble and he was fantastic today.

You know, have a bit of review of this one. Certainly, One game out of nine. Do not want to dwell on this too much. No, no regrets (On opting to bat first)."
Sidharth: Personally, I feel Australia were around 50 runs short. That made a big difference.
Ajay: I think it has to be that catch dropped by Mitch Marsh when Team India was in deep waters. You can't drop the chase master and he showed why not to 🙌
Akshaya: Australia lost in two parts! Firstly, they didn't read the situations perfectly following the dismissals of Warner or, maybe, even Smith. 250 would have been a match-winning total on this pitch.

Secondly, you don't drop catches and don't drop Virat Kohli with the team already on the back foot. So, catches win you matches- this phrase still stands tall. Had Mitchell Marsh taken that catch of Virat early on in his innings, who knows!
Sidharth: Guys, where do you think Australia lost this game?
KL Rahul (Player of the Match): "To be quite honest to be with you, we didn't have any conversation. I just wanted to get some breath back. I had to get back on the field quickly and had to take some breath back. We decided to play like a Test match and take things forward.

There was some help for the fast bowlers. The dew played a part for them and they changed the ball but it was a two-paced wicket. It was not an easy surface to bat on. It was not a flat wicket nor a bowling-friendly one. So we are really happy to get the win today.

I hit it too well. I was calculating how I could get to a hundred. The only way I could get to a hundred was by hitting a four and a six. But never mind. Some other day, I will get a hundred."
Player of the Match: KL Rahul
Sidharth: India off to a good start. A victory that'll be helpful for them in the coming matches. Lots to learn.
Ajay: Kannur Lokesh Rahul 🔥 Take a bow man. After that horrific injury in IPL 2023, he fought through that tough period and came back with a bang in the Asia Cup, now at cricket's most prestigeous event played one of the finest knocks anyone ever could play on this Chennai Track.
1st Innings Recap:

Earlier, Australia were happy to bat first on a surface that was brown and had cracks written all over it. They suffered an early blow as a pearler from Jasprit Bumrah nicked the outside edge to Virat Kohli at the slip cordon. Siraj was a tad expensive to start with but improved with time.

Steve Smith stepped up at no. 3 and glued a vital partnership with David Warner. They tailored 69 runs together for the second wicket and played beautifully throughout the phase. Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav were introduced early while Hardik Pandya was taken off after his expensive first over where he got hurt in the finger of his right hand.

It was Kuldep with the breakthrough in the 17th over and after a brisk interval, Ravindra Jadeja struck halfway through the innings. Warner was caught and bowled for 41 while Smith was cleaned by a peach of a delivery from Jadeja.

Right after the spinners weaved magic and the middle order failed prey to them. Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey, and Cameron Green were prey to the spin trio of Jadeja, Kuldeep, and Ashwin. Australia were pushed on the back foot and even the pacers - Siraj and Bumrah coupled with them brilliantly. Some contributions from Mitchell Starc (28) at the late end helped them reach a total of 199 runs with three balls to spare. Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers with a three-fer followed by a couple each for Kuldeep and Bumrah.
9:51 PM IST | The lights go on and they're flickering in the Chepauk Stadium after KL Rahul steers India past the finishing line with a six⚡. Rewind a year back- criticism, slow strike rate, injuries, and whatnot. When the time comes, Rahul delivers with the bat and celebrates in some style. India are off the mark in the tournament and drubbed Australia by six wickets.

Heart came out of the mouth of the Indian fans when the scorecard saw 2-3. A partnership of 165 runs followed in a difficult surface between Rahul and Virat Kohli that acted as the bedrock to yield this sweet fruit.

This is also the first time ever in a World Cup that a team won a game after being three wickets down for less than four runs.

In pursuit of a tricky chase of 200 runs, India was on the verge of reminiscing nightmares that governed their past in the ICC tournaments.

Ishan Kishan gifted his wicket to Mitchell Starc in the first over while trying to chase a full ball outside the off. Rohit Sharma was trapped in front in the very next over off Josh Hazlewood and the wickets were seen to be umpires call after reviewing. One Mumbaikar followed the other Mumbaikar back to the hut as Shreyas Iyer was trapped in the very same over at cover point.

The scoreboard read 2-3 within the first couple of overs. Just when the Men in Blue were pushed against the wall, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli stood firm and denied the Aussie bowlers for long. The pair took their time to settle in and mixed some elegant strokes with beautiful strike rotations.

Kohli was dropped in his initial stages by Mitchell Marsh and that turned out to be a big injury for the Kangaroos later on. A 165 runs stand between India's no. 3 and no. 5 followed by some quickire from Hardik Pandya sealed the deal for the Indian side with 52 balls to spare. This will also be a huge boost to the nrr for the hosts.

Amidst all, Rahul hit three overs in Adam Zampa's first over, Kohli got struck in the helmet by Mitch Starc and followed it by a glorious square drive in the next ball. These were few of the highlights barring the awesome compliment between the wickets from the pair.
Akshay: Rahul is on his haunches. He is in disbelief. He wanted to hit a boundary and then a six to win the game and bring up his century. But he gets plenty on that one to send it all the way.
