Milestone
That's it from the coverage of this game where we have seen another one-sided game in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Do join us tomorrow for the India Bangladesh game from Pune. Stick around to our network for all the pre-match build up and then live match action as well. For now, this is Ayan Chatterjee signing off on behalf of my co-commentators Akshay Bhide, AkshayaKrishna Polya, Sidharth Gulati alongside scorer/analyst Zeeshan Naiyer. Stay safe, happy, and cool. Goodnight and CHEERS!
Tom Latham (New Zealand Captain): "Yes, a pleasing start and a great performance today. The way we came back after being put under pressure and came well with the ball showed quality that we have and possess.

It was all about building partnership and we hung in there. They bowled well and we got lucky. But it was about keeping it deep and see how we finish was important for us.

The way we started with the bat and then ball as well showed character from our end. We really stick to the basics. Mitchell Santner bowled well after the opening bowlers started well.

Yes, we are ready for the game in Dharamsala. We need to adapt quickly and feel quite comfortable in playing against India. Looking forward to it."
Hashmatullah Shahidi (Afghanistan Captain): "Really disappointed to drop catches, you have to take those at these levels. End of the day, those dropped catches hurt you. The team has done well, but because of those catches, we have lost the game.

During the last 6 overs of the first innings, New Zealand scored too many runs. We tried our best, but things didn't go our way. Because we dropped a couple of catches before the 40th over, we couldn't stop the set batters. We have failed to stop them.

Yeah, the toss, I can say that you can't judge much. First innings as well, it did spin a bit. But one thing I can confirm is that we could have done well. We did bowl well, but the fielding has let us down.

Tonight will definitely hurt us, but we have more games remaining in the tournament. We have got Pakistan next, and we will certainly do way much better than tonight. We will talk about it and try to improve wherever we can in the coming matches."
Moment of the Game 👇
Glenn Phillips (Player of the Match): "Obviously, the Afghan spinners are extremely talented and we lost wickets in the middle overs. So really happy with the way me and Tommy played in the middle overs.

Here in Chennai, the pitch is a bit dusty and we understood what we possibly could get in the last 10 overs. We took it till the end and made sure that we ended on a high with  the power game.

We thought, if we stayed till the end, we could get 60 in the last six overs. If we can get to 180, it would be good but 250 or around 260 would have been a par score here. Also, credit to Santner and Chapman for finishing the innings they did.

Team first mentality always helps. It's always good when the players are contributing to the team's success and hope we keep improving in the future."

8:55 PM IST and Local Time: A comprehensive win for New Zealand here in Chennai as they thrash Afghanistan by 149 runs to go top of the points table with 4 wins in 4 games. They have outplayed Afghanistan in all facets of the game especially in the fielding department and that made all the difference in the end.

Chasing a mammoth 289 for the win, Afghanistan lost their openers relatively cheaply as they both rarely got to double figures. Rahmat Shah hung in there and top scored 36 off 62 balls. Omarzai scored 27 off 32 balls. Ikram Alikhil was unbeaten on 19* off 21 balls. But he lost his partners at the other end as Afghanistan folded for 139 in 34.4 overs. 5 extras given by the fielding side.

The New Zealand bowlers bowled really well and caught well tonight. Lockie Ferguson and Mitchell Santner picked up 3 wickets apiece with the latter cleaning up the tail and getting to 100 ODI wickets. A couple of wickets for the spearhead Trent Boult while Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra got a wicket each. Great bowling performance from the Blackcaps.

Earlier in the game, New Zealand were asked to bat first by Afghanistan. Devon Conway looked good for his 20 off 18 balls. Will Young scored 54 off 64 balls while Rachin Ravindra scored 32 off 41 balls. They lost their way a bit when they slipped to 110/4 but were rescued by the pair of skipper Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips. The duo put on 144 for the 5th wicket and changed the game. Latham scored 68 off 74 balls while Glenn Phillips top scored with 71 off 80 balls. Mark Chapman finished things off in style with his unbeaten 25* off 12 balls as New Zealand ended with 288/6 in 50 overs. 10 extras were given by the fielding side.

Afghanistan were mixed bag with the ball and awful in the field as they dropped 5-6 catches. A couple of wickets apiece for Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai while Mujeeb and Rashid Khan picked up a wicket apiece. Rashid could have easily had more, but dropped catches happened off his bowling and he was literally pissed off. A bad day in the office for Afghanistan and a great day for New Zealand overall.

So, New Zealand wins this game by 149 runs and make it 4 wins out of 4. They improve their NRR and go to the top of the points table. Stick around for the presentations.
34.4 M Santner to F Farooqi
W WICKETTTTT!!!! Easy work for New Zealand here in Chennai! They have brushed aside the spirited Afghan Atalans by a massive margin of 149 runs with more than 15 overs to spare! New Zealand win 4 in 4 and now move to the top of the points table. Fuller-length delivery following the batter backing away a touch. Pitches and turns away. Farooqi stays leg side of the ball and looks to drive forward but is not to the pitch of the ball, getting an outside edge. It flows straight to the fielder at first slip as Daryl Mitchell takes a sitter. Santner ends his evening with three wickets, and Afghanistan have only themselves to blame. Decision at toss, dropped catches and approach during the run-chase, you keep on picking the loopholes...
34.3 M Santner to F Farooqi
0 Good length, between middle and leg, Farooqi gently defends it to the off side.
