12:40am IST, 9:40pm Local Time: Sourya- So the high-flying Durban’s Super Giants have almost made it certain that they will finish on top of the table in SA20 after beating the struggling Pretoria Capitals by eight runs at home today.
Chasing a challenging 175 to keep their hopes of qualification alive, the Capitals kept losing wickets at regular intervals despite scoring briskly.
Phil Salt was out off the very second ball of the innings. His opening partner Will Jacks (41 off 26), was going great guns before the magnificent Junior Dala (5/26), got him clean bowled. His skidders kept on getting wickets and turning the screw on the Capitals' batting. No one else really got going despite some cameos here and there.
Rilee Rossouw’s struggles in the middle overs also added to the Capitals’ demise. Noor Ahmad (1/23) was once again brilliant, turning the game in his side’s favor in the middle overs. He was ably complemented by Naveen-ul-Haq in those crucial overs on a two-paced wicket. In the end, the Capitals fell just a little short but had never really looked to be in the chase despite the final margin being low.
Earlier, the home team won the toss and chose to bat first. Spearheaded by another massive innings from Matthew Breetzke (73 off 46), they got off to a rollicking start. Breetzke timed and placed the ball to perfection and also used the long handle when needed.
Heinrich Klaasen also got to quickfire 30 as well and they seemed on course for a 200 plus score before the ball started reversing and the spinner Senuran Muthusamy (3/26) picking up regular wickets. JJ Smuts played a fine cameo late and Naveen-ul-Haq hit two big shots off the last two balls to get Durban to a defendable total.
